New to counseling?

What is it going to be like? What if I'm uncomfortable? Will this even work?

If you've never been to counseling, you may be asking yourself these questions. You likely have a number of emotions before your first appointment. It's totally normal to feel anxious, panicky, or skeptical. Some of that may have to do with all of the unknowns before you.

It can be so difficult to even make the call, let alone commit to making an appointment. If you are reading this, you are likely considering doing so. I want to encourage you and applaud you for getting this far. I know it can take a lot of courage.

My hope is that I can give you a taste of what to expect before you arrive, perhaps to ease some of that anxiety.

Our first session is an hour and ten minutes long. It's mainly a chance for me to get to know you - your story, and the specific situation that led you to make the call. We will be building a foundation so I can know how best to help you going forward. We can start wherever you want to start. I'm also happy to ask a few leading questions if that is more comfortable for you.

The first session is also about me helping you make the best decision for you.

So much of success in counseling depends on the fit between counselor and client. We'll talk about your goals for counseling and what the process would look like with me to meet those goals. It's also a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about counseling.

If you feel like things are connecting and that it is a good fit by the end, then we can continue. If not, then I can send you on your way with some resources and help you find someone who would be a better fit for you.
